As an alternative to white sugar (sucrose), we can use other sweeteners, especially of natural origin, some more known than others: while sugar is refined and does not provide any nutrients other than calories, almost all the products on this list have extra properties that make them somehow a better option. These are considered healthy sugar substitute.
A premise on sugar and health
Each carbohydrate has a more or less strong cariogenic power because bacteria proliferate thanks to sugars: using a substitute for normal white sugar does not mean being able to neglect oral hygiene, on the contrary! Some products have, however, beneficial properties that make them preferable to sucrose. A golden rule is to drink water after taking sweets or sweeteners, so as to allow a first "washing" of the particles that remain attached to the surface of the teeth. As soon as possible it will then be necessary to proceed with the usual home hygiene maneuvers.
ALTERNATIVE TO SUGAR: OUR TIPS
• Honey
The alternative to sugar par excellence is honey. This substance is derived from the processing of pollen carried out by bees. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, so it can help in the case of gingivitis and also in combating the action of plaque. Being a very sticky substance, however, it is necessary to brush your teeth well after taking it. Whenever possible, it can be slightly diluted with another liquid.
• Stevia
Stevia rebaudiana is a South American plant from which steviolglycosidases are extracted.
Unlike honey, it is calorie-free, does not harm the health of the teeth, and can also be used by those suffering from diabetes, but some people just do not like its bitter aftertaste! In addition, the stevia that is used in food is, in fact, a chemical extract that does not provide any nutrients.
• Maple Sugar-free syrup
Traditionally used especially in North America, maple syrup has now wide trade even from us. This is the best sugar free syrup. Like honey, it has many properties. It can also be consumed by those who follow a vegan diet. Beware, however, of the components! Given its lower sugar sweetness level, extra glucose or fructose is often added to it.
• Agave Sugar-free syrup
Similar to maple syrup, agave syrup is extracted from the homonymous plant. Very similar to honey, it is rich in fructose and should therefore be consumed in moderation, especially by those suffering from imbalances in blood sugar.
